Anatomy of a Seat
Take a moment and think about what you’re sitting on. Yes, really! What exactly is under that navy blue seat cover? The design of a seat is complex, in some cases composed of more than 100 parts and created with your comfort in mind.
Each seat design undergoes rigorous testing for comfort and safety. A computer-based pressure-mapping system is applied to pinpoint potential areas of discomfort, and the materials go through testing to meet strict FAA safety regulations.
Seats also are tested by ergonomists who review cushion length, height of the cushion from the floor, and the space between the cushion edge and the back of the seat in front of it.
How long does it take to create a seat?
The entire process, from design to installation, typically takes 12 to 14 months. Most of the work takes place during the design stages. During the first three months, engineers define the seat’s construction and review initial models. The design is then tweaked and improved for the next three to four months. Certification exercises and safety testing take place over the following six months. Then comes the final assembly stage, which surprisingly takes the least amount of time — just two to three hours for each seat.
What are seat belt air bags?
US Airways began installing seat belt air bags a year before the FAA started requiring them in 2009. These devices are installed in several seats on US Airways planes including most front-row seats in Economy, Coach, and First Class.
The air bags are virtually invisible, stored in the lap belt portion of the seat belt. They will only deploy when a signal is tripped, and they meet a high standard of safety regulations. They deploy up and away from you, and they’re completely safe for all passengers — young and old, large and small.
Quick Tips
How to fight jet lag: Drink plenty of water while in flight. After arrival, sleep for only three hours, then force yourself to get up and walk around.
