Exactly 145 years after construction of the iconic dome of the U.S. Capitol was completed, the biggest expansion project in the building’s history is being unveiled. When the new Capitol Visitor Center opens to the public December 2, guests will experience the seat of America’s government as never before. The entire facility was built underground to preserve the outside appearance of the Capitol and grounds, which also got a makeover of new trees and restored historic fountains. The facility includes two orientation theaters, a cafeteria, gift shops, and an exhibition gallery where documents and artifacts from the National Archives and the Library of Congress will be on display. The new visitor center is large — threequarters the size of the Capitol itself. For info on touring the Capitol, call the Capitol Guide Service at 202.225.6827.
