One of winter’s joys is escaping the cold by relaxing in front of a roaring fire. Here are a few spots around Philly with fireplaces worth warming up to.

XIX Nineteen

The fireplace here comes with a view. The restaurant is on the 19th floor of the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue. For maximum warmth, sit at the bar where leather chairs and sofas surround the hearth. It’s an ideal spot for a cocktail and conversation.

The Black Sheep

At this classic midtown Irish bar, the game’s always on (international sports too). A seat at a table next to the first floor’s roaring fireplace will warm you on the outside. The baked macaroni and cheese, a Black Sheep favorite, will warm you on the inside.

Jones

Get a table and swivel chair by the modern centerpiece fireplace. The bar area also offers good fireside views. If you crave comfort food, order the Thanksgiving dinner (served year round) with turkey and fixings.

SnackBar

If you’re a fan of urban design, check out the SnackBar. It’s popular with oenophiles looking to split a bottle, while the tapas-style meals are also perfect for sharing. The SnackBar is open for dinner only; brunch is available on weekends.

Philidelphia

Motor Pool

Philadelphians are freeing themselves from car ownership. More than 54,000 residents have turned to car-sharing programs. And visitors can now get in on the trend by sharing instead of renting.

You don’t have to be an urban hipster to appreciate the benefits. You’ll have a car when you need it but pay only when you drive — just $3.90 to $11 an hour. Insurance, gas, and parking are free, so car sharing is economical, even with the $25 sign-up fee. For every spin around town, you can choose from dozens of different models, including Mini convertibles, BMWs, and hybrids.

There are two car-sharing operations in town: PhillyCarShare (215.730.0988, phillycarshare.org) and Zipcar (215.735.3691, zipcar.com). Contact them to compare programs and prices. For example, PhillyCarShare might be best if you’re a regular visitor to Philly, while Zipcar might make more sense if you travel more widely.
