Joe Johnston made a name for himself with Joe’s Real BBQ in Gilbert, a 30-minute drive from Phoenix. Two years ago, he figured out how to top that and preserve his family’s legacy at the same time: He opened Joe’s Farm Grill in the old Johnston family ranch house.
The home, built in 1966, has been radically transformed, but you can still see traces of the original building. For example, the family room fireplace is in what’s now the dining room. In 1960, Johnston’s father bought the land around the place to grow sugar beets, cotton, grains, corn, and alfalfa. Now, the produce harvested in those fields ends up on Joe’s menu of gourmet comfort foods.
Locals’ favorite menu items by far are the deep-fried zucchini slices. They’re a nice change from the usual french fries, but then again, Joe’s fries are far from ordinary. The garlic fries, tossed with olive oil, pecorino, and herbs are a perfect complement to Joe’s selection of burgers, chicken sandwiches, pizzas, and barbecue.
