Where the Wild Things Are
by Charu Suri
Listen to lions roar at twilight, then sip wine on your patio while watching elephants play in the distance. This isn’t an African safari; it’s Vision Quest Safari Bed & Breakfast near Monterey, California. The B&B’s four bungalows are set amid the 51-acre Vision Quest Ranch, home to 180 animals including ostriches, tigers, elephants, and camels. Owner Charlie Sammut lends exotic animals to the film and television industry, and he provides a home for creatures who’ve retired from show business. A kennel, a pet resort, and an equestrian center are also on the grounds.
B&B guests have the opportunity to mingle with the animals. “An elephant brings you breakfast in a basket each morning,” says Sammut. The basket also contains some fruit for you to share with the elephant upon delivery (that’s his gratuity). Other “visitors,” like Kgosi the king cheetah, may also drop by the suites unannounced.
All the animals have been bred in the U.S., and there are several resident trainers to ensure the safety of guests. You can pet the domesticated tigers, camels, and lions under watchful scrutiny, or sign up for an educational safari package that lets you spend more time with the animals. Rates range from $225 to $250 per night for double occupancy. Bungalows book quickly, so it’s best to reserve at least four to six weeks in advance. Visit visionquestranch.com for more info.
