Pittsburgh
From the Top
by Robert Isenberg
For over a century, Pittsburghers have trekked up Mount Washington — driving the twisting roads or packing into the Duquesne Incline, a tiny cable car that slowly ascends the cliffside — just to gaze at the city below. At the summit, Grandview Avenue offers a vista that stretches from the confluence of the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio rivers in the heart of the city’s business district, all the way to the hilly horizon where the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning juts into the sky.
But Grandview offers more than a majestic panorama. It’s also home to some of the Steel City’s most elegant restaurants. Among them, you’ll find the Georgetowne Inn, a colonial-style dining room that serves fine seafood, veal, and beef dishes. The two-level Coal Hill Steakhouse at the Grandview Saloon offers the best porch in the city — the wood planks seem to levitate above the cliffs. Seafood fans will want to try Monterey Bay Fish Grotto, where the catch is fresh and the interior is refined by stone accents and floor-to-ceiling windows. The five-star LeMont serves favorites like Chateaubriand for Two and Chilean Sea Bass Tropicana. Pittsburgh Magazine readers recently named it the city’s most romantic restaurant.
