Headed to Providence? Don’t miss a chance to take one of Chef Cindy Salvato’s weekly culinary tours of Federal Hill. An immigrant neighborhood that has undergone several transformations, “the Hill” is now the heart of Italian culture in Providence. It’s also a fabulous place to eat and shop. Salvato created her tour to introduce visitors to local specialty food markets and the joys of Italian cooking. Sights along the way vary from week to week, but popular stops include Scialo Brothers Bakery to see the 75-year-old brick ovens, Venda Ravioli to watch the ravioli makers at work, and Gasbarro’s Wines to peruse the shelves for a new find. Salvato also offers useful, hands-on tips for selecting the freshest ingredients and then using them to create delicious meals at home. And be ready to eat: Along the way, shop owners set out tasty treats — from cheese, antipasti, and bread to wine, chocolates, and cookies — for guests to nibble and enjoy.
Tours last three hours and are offered on Saturday mornings. For info or to register, call 401.934.2149 or visit rimarkettours.com.
