You don’t have to travel to New York to see quality theater. In the Steel City, you can catch professional companies for half the price of a Broadway ticket. Here are some of this month’s thespian gems.

Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre

In Ireland, you’re assured two things: pubs and playwrights. Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre (PICT) offers great helpings of the second. The works of Shakespeare, Wilde, and Beckett have all graced PICT’s stages, wowing audiences with big-budget sets and the finest dramatic actors in the city. This month (through August 16), see John Millington Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World, a morbid three-act satire of Ireland’s social mores. The play incited a riot when it was first produced in 1907.

Cabaret at Theater Square

Visiting the Cabaret is like traveling back in time — driving downtown, enjoying a cocktail at the adjoining lounge, then ordering dinner as the lights dim and the music starts up. The Cabaret’s selection leans toward newer musical revues, such as Forever Plaid and Always, Patsy Cline. There’s also live music in the Backstage Bar. This summer’s series is Shear Madness, a murder mystery set in a hair salon. The catch? The audience decides whodunit.

Quantum Theatre

Quantum can be a little hard to find because the company rarely produces in the same place twice. They’ve staged Fournier in a horse stable, Zola in a swimming pool, and Ondaatje in a former adult movie theater. This month (through August 24) they take on Cymbeline, a complex lesser-known Shakespearean comedy about kings, queens, and cross-dressers. But it wouldn’t be Quantum without a twist: This production of Cymbeline is performed outdoors in Mellon Park with technical support from the Robotics Institute of Carnegie-Mellon University.
