When it comes to breakfast, Phoenix is one of the best cities to wake up in. No matter your taste — or the size of your appetite — you’re sure to find something that’ll hit the spot.

Eggs: Matt’s Big Breakfast

If you miss this tiny diner the first time you drive by, look harder. It’s worth finding. But get there early. Matt’s opens at 6:30, and patrons who don’t arrive until around 9:00 may have to wait an hour or more for a table. The fuss is over owner Matt Pool’s good, honest food, beginning with his egg dishes. The Salami Scramble, made by scrambling three eggs with soppressata, is a delicious example of Pool’s simple but oh-so-good creations.

Pancakes: The Breakfast Club

Before you try them, log on to the eatery’s Web site and check them out: a short stack of buttermilk pancakes smothered in blueberries and dusted with powdered sugar. In a world where so many things aren’t as good as advertised, The Breakfast Club’s Bar Harbour Flapjack may be even better.

Bagels: Chompie’s

There are bagels and then there are New York bagels, with a shell so crispy and insides so chewy your jaw aches for the rest of the day. In Phoenix, the locals get the NYC variety at Chompie’s. Even the smooth, buttery cream cheese is reminiscent of New York bagel shops. The wall-size mural of all things Manhattan in the Tempe location (one of three area stores) makes the experience that much more convincing.

Something Different: Original Pancake House

The buzz here is all about the signature apple pancake and Dutch Baby. The apple pancake is baked with sauteed Granny Smith apples and then glazed with cinnamon. The Dutch Baby is a puffed, custard-like confection with whipped butter, lemon, and powdered sugar. Take your pick. Either will tame your appetite until lunch — and maybe longer.
