Great Shakes

Less than 30 miles from Lexington, tucked amid the Kentucky bluegrass and rolling hills dotted with thoroughbreds, you’ll find a hidden gem: the largest restored Shaker village in the U.S. Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill features a living history museum with 34 meticulously preserved 19th-century buildings that demonstrate the unparalleled skill and resourcefulness of the Shakers. The village is located on 3,000 acres of preserved farmland and contains more than 25 miles of historic rock fences — the biggest such collection still remaining in the state.

Guests can stay overnight at The Inn at Shaker Village. Rooms, suites, and private cottages are decorated with Shaker reproduction furniture and equipped with modern conveniences. The Shakers believed in keeping up with the times, so don’t be surprised to find TVs, luxurious feather pillows, and Tempur-Pedic mattresses.

The Trustees’ Office Dining Room offers genuine Shaker dishes like tomato celery soup, baked herb chicken, and the famous Shaker lemon pie. The on-site craft store sells everything from reproduction furniture to signature Shaker oval nesting boxes.
