Skip the hustle and bustle of down-town and explore a different side of Charlotte. The Queen City is home to miles of great hiking trails.

Reedy Creek Park and Nature Preserve

There are 10 miles of trails nestled in this 727-acre preserve. The Robinson Rock House Trail is one of the most popular. It leads to the archaeological ruins of a home built in the late 1790s. Along the way, be on the lookout for the Kentucky warblers and Gulf Coast spiny softshell turtles that live there.

U.S. National Whitewater Center

After riding the rapids on the largest artificial whitewater river in the world, dry off on one of the trails that crisscross the 307-acre adventure sports facility. There are 11 miles of gently sloping paths that eventually lead back to the Whitewater Center, where you can rehydrate and refuel at the restaurant overlooking the rapids.

Crowders Mountain State Park

At 1,705 feet, the summit of the Pinnacle Trail marks the highest point in nearby Gaston County, but the vista at the top is worth the strenuous 1.7-mile trek. Before hiking back to the trailhead, spend a few minutes soaking up the sun and taking in fantastic views of downtown Charlotte.

Latta Plantation Nature Preserve

This former cotton plantation is now the largest nature preserve in Mecklenburg County at 1,343 acres. There are 16 miles of trails that lead through hardwood forests and a Piedmont Prairie restoration site. After your hike, check out the butterfly gardens and bird-feeding stations at the Nature Center, then explore Historic Latta Plantation, a restored 19th-century Federal-style home and living history farm.
